Google Home hands the keys to agents, and that’s both useful and a little alarming

My first reaction was not “wow, smart home intelligence at last.” It was: are we really ready to let arbitrary agents touch the layer that can see my cameras, thermostats, lights, and routines? The Verge piece makes the upside pretty obvious — and honestly, that part is real. If you’ve ever tried to troubleshoot a flaky automation or figure out why a light stayed on all night, a model that can read history and reason over it is way more useful than a chatbot that just parrots “I can’t do that.”

What jumps out, though, is that Google seems to be doing something more strategic than just adding another integration. This looks like an attempt to become the control plane for the smart home, not just the app you happen to open when a bulb misbehaves. That’s a much bigger play than “Claude can turn on your lights.” It’s infrastructure thinking: let third-party agents connect to Google Home’s data and device layer, and suddenly Google sits underneath a bunch of experiences it doesn’t fully own.

That’s smart. It’s also the kind of move that depends on trust the company hasn’t exactly earned for permanence. The article nods to the graveyard of Google smart home projects, and that part matters more than the feature list. Developers may love the idea of MCP access, but they’re being asked to build against a platform from a company with a long habit of changing course, rebranding, or just letting things drift. If I were building on this, I’d be interested, but cautious. Very cautious.

I also think the security framing is doing a lot of work here. Google says it won’t let an agent unlock doors, and that’s good, but “won’t let it do the worst thing” is not the same as “safe.” The article’s warning about unexpected or undesired behavior feels like the honest part. Agents are good at being plausible, not always reliable. In a smart home, plausibility can still burn you: the wrong routine at the wrong time, a bad assumption about occupancy, a weird interpretation of event history. That’s not theoretical. We’ve all seen enough LLM weirdness to know how fast “helpful” becomes “why did it do that?”

What I’d actually try here is narrower than the pitch suggests: not a fully autonomous home agent, but a setup where a model can inspect state, explain patterns, and propose automations before it gets write access. That feels like the sweet spot. Give it read-heavy tasks first. Let it surface “you left the kitchen lights on for six hours three times last week” or “your hallway sensor is flapping.” Once it proves it can behave, then maybe it can earn the right to change things.

The bigger question is whether Google and the agent ecosystem can keep this from turning into another messy layer of half-compatible controls. If they can, this is genuinely interesting. If not, it’ll be one more ambitious smart home promise that mostly helps demos.
