What jumps out to me is not the integration itself. It’s the implication: Claude is now being invited to live inside the same Workspace surface where Gemini already has a native seat. That says a lot about how messy the AI assistant market still is. Users do not want to pick one model and reorganize their whole working life around it. They want the model they already trust to show up where the documents are.
The part I’d actually want to try is the Sheets angle. Docs and Slides are the obvious demo fodder, but Sheets is where these assistants either become genuinely useful or collapse into confident nonsense. If Claude can build formulas from context, handle messy tables, and use pasted links without turning the whole thing into a brittle prompt circus, that’s the interesting test. The article gestures at that, but I’d still be cautious. “Can write formulas” is not the same as “is reliable on real spreadsheet work,” and there’s a big gap between those two claims.
I also think the “ask before edits” mode matters more than it sounds. For code and docs, automatic edits are where people get nervous fast. A preview step is boring, but boring is good when an AI is changing someone’s work inside Docs or Slides. Anthropic seems to understand that the trust problem is really an edit-control problem, not just a model-quality problem.
What’s less convincing to me is the framing that this is mainly for people “invested in Claude.” Sure, that’s true, but the deeper play is probably about distribution. Being available in Google Workspace is a way to stop Claude from feeling like a separate destination. If Anthropic can become the assistant people reach for inside their existing files, that’s a stronger position than just having a chat window with good benchmark scores.
I’d be more interested in how these connectors behave in practice than in the headline. Do they preserve formatting? How much context do they really pull in? Can they handle ugly, real-world documents, or only neat demo files? That’s where these integrations usually stop being magical and start being annoying. If Claude gets that part right, then this is a legit step. If not, it’s just another sidebar.
