Anthropic’s bet on less choice feels bolder than it looks

What actually jumps out to me is not the interface merge itself, but the confidence behind it. Anthropic is basically saying: we think users are bad at deciding whether they want Chat or Cowork, so the product should decide for them. That is a pretty opinionated move for a company that sells intelligence as a core feature. It also sounds, frankly, like a gamble.

I’m torn on whether this is smart UX or just a cleaner way to hide complexity. On one hand, reducing a forked product surface is usually good. People do get tired of making the same architectural decision over and over, especially when the choice is mostly about workflow packaging rather than capability. On the other hand, collapsing distinct modes can backfire if the routing layer isn’t obvious enough. If Claude sends your work down the “wrong” path, you may not notice until the answer quality or formatting feels off. That’s the part I’d want to test myself.

The Docs and Slides beta is the more interesting signal to me. That’s not just “chat, but with files.” It suggests Anthropic wants Claude to sit closer to actual deliverables, not just brainstorming. If this works well, it could be genuinely useful: ask for a doc, get a doc; ask for a deck, get a deck. But I’m skeptical of how polished those outputs will be in practice. Generated slides are easy to demo and hard to live with. The bar is not “it made something that looks like slides”; the bar is “it made something I’d send to coworkers without a cleanup pass.”

There’s also a strategic subtext here. Anthropic seems to be betting that the model can infer intent well enough that product choices become invisible. That’s the old AI promise in a more concrete form. If it lands, the UI gets simpler and the model gets more power. If it misses, users lose control and feel vaguely patronized. I think that tension is going to show up a lot more in AI tools over the next year: fewer buttons, more trust, and a much bigger penalty when the trust is misplaced.

I’d be curious to see whether power users embrace this or immediately start asking for the old knobs back. My guess is they will. People say they want simplicity until they discover that the hidden choice was doing real work.

Reference: Anthropic bet users were choosing wrong. So it removed the choice.
