Claude’s “finish the task” pitch is the interesting part

What jumps out to me is not that Anthropic has another bigger, better model. It’s that the company is leaning hard into a very specific promise: don’t just help me start coding, help me close the loop.

That sounds obvious until you’ve actually used these tools for real work. Starting is cheap. Completing is where the pain lives. The model needs to keep track of edge cases, stop itself from wandering, make sensible tradeoffs, and not quietly introduce a “works on my machine” bug while sounding confident the whole time. So when Anthropic frames Claude Opus 5.5 around full-lifecycle coding, that feels like the right battlefield.

But I’m also skeptical of the neatness of the claim. “Matches Fable 5.1 on most work at 40% less cost” is the kind of sentence that sounds great in a blog post and becomes much murkier once you ask what “most work” actually means. Most work according to which benchmark, which repo shape, which test harness, which failure mode? The source itself basically admits the real issue: “done” still isn’t “correct.” That line matters more than the headline. A model can close tickets, but if it’s only closing them cosmetically, you’ve bought velocity and lost trust.

That’s the real tension here. Coding agents are getting better at acting like they understand the whole lifecycle, but the lifecycle is not a demo. It’s editing, testing, debugging, rerunning, noticing that the first fix broke something three directories away, and knowing when to stop pretending. If Opus 5.5 is cheaper and genuinely better at staying on task, that’s useful. If it’s just better at producing the appearance of completion, developers will find out quickly.

I’d be most interested in whether this model is actually better at the boring middle: reading existing code, respecting project conventions, and surviving a few rounds of verification without losing the thread. That’s where these systems usually disappoint. Not in the first answer. In the fourth.
