Cloudflare’s Forge feels less like a product launch and more like a quiet rebuttal

What jumps out to me is the timing. Anthropic buys Stainless and shuts down its SDK generator; Cloudflare then turns around and open-sources Forge. That is not a coincidence you can shrug off. It reads like a public vote of no confidence in the idea that SDK generation should be locked up inside a company, especially after customers have already built around it.

I’m a little skeptical of the clean story people will want to tell here, though: “open source good, acquisition bad.” It’s not that simple. If Stainless was valuable enough for Anthropic to buy, then there’s obviously real demand for generated SDKs and API tooling. But once the generator disappears behind a corporate wall, everyone else who relied on that workflow is left wondering whether they’re next. Cloudflare open-sourcing Forge looks, to me, like a way to keep the ecosystem from getting hostage to one vendor’s roadmap.

The more interesting question is whether Forge is genuinely a durable alternative or just a defensive move. Open source alone doesn’t guarantee adoption. Developers will care about whether it keeps up with API churn, how much customization it allows, and whether it actually reduces the grind of maintaining client libraries. If it’s just a shiny generator with a permissive license, people will try it and quietly drift back to hand-rolled code or whatever internal tooling they already have.

Still, I think Cloudflare is doing something strategically smart here. In the LLM API world, developer trust is partly about model quality and partly about whether the surrounding tooling feels stable. SDK generators sit in that second bucket, and they matter more than they get credit for. If the infrastructure around Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, or whoever keeps changing ownership and access terms, developers will start preferring tools that are boring in the best sense: open, inspectable, and not one acquisition away from vanishing.
