What jumps out to me is not the “merge” itself, but the product philosophy hiding inside it: Anthropic seems to be betting that the painful part of AI work is no longer the model, it’s the handoff. Chat for quick stuff, Cowork for bigger tasks, Design for visual work — that separation probably made sense internally, but from a user’s point of view it sounds like a tax. If Claude can actually infer the shape of the task well enough to route it, that’s a nice UX win. If it can’t, then “one Claude” is just a rebrand with extra chrome.
I’m also mildly skeptical of the confidence here. The article leans hard on a future where Claude can take a messy report, dig around in connectors, draft slides, keep working after you close your laptop, and then surface everything in one shareable link. That’s an appealing demo path. It’s also exactly the kind of workflow that tends to look cleaner in product copy than in real life. The moment you involve docs, slides, comments, phone handoff, scheduling, and connectors, the failure modes multiply fast. Wrong source, stale context, weird formatting, a slide that looks okay until you try to present it. I’d want to test those edges before I trusted it with anything more than a draft.
The more interesting bit, to me, is the default behavior: Claude asks before taking action unless you tell it to keep going. That’s the right instinct. A lot of agent-y products try to sound autonomous first and safe second. Here the messaging is the reverse: you keep the final say. If that holds up in practice, it’s a sensible compromise for enterprise users who want delegation without turning the system loose.
I do wonder whether this unification makes Claude feel simpler or just more ambitious in a way that’s harder to explain. The name “Cowork” disappearing may be good branding, but it also blurs the boundary between chat as conversation and chat as execution environment. Maybe that’s the point. I think Anthropic wants Claude to be less “ask me anything” and more “start here, I’ll carry it.” That’s a stronger product story, as long as the model is good enough at not making a confident mess.
