Claude finally gets the less-annoying version of computer use

What jumps out to me is not the feature itself, but the fact that this is the version of computer use people will actually tolerate. Letting an agent commandeer your cursor is still a bit of a party trick. Letting it run in the background while you keep working feels much closer to something I’d leave on.

That said, I’m not sure this is as huge a leap as the framing suggests. Anthropic is catching up to a pattern OpenAI already pushed onto the Mac earlier this year, so the interesting part is less “Anthropic invents new thing” and more “Claude’s Mac app is becoming a more believable daily tool.” That matters for anyone building with Claude Code, because background execution changes the economics of using these agents: you’re no longer babysitting every click.

I’d want to test the boring stuff first. Does it stay reliable when another app steals focus? Does it behave sanely with permission prompts? Does it actually help with long-running, messy desktop tasks, or does it just make demos look nicer? Background mode sounds like a small UX tweak, but these agents are only useful when they fade into the background instead of demanding yours.

For Pro and Max users on macOS, this is the kind of upgrade that makes Claude feel less like a chatbot with ambitions and more like an assistant that can keep busy while you do something else. That’s the right direction. I just wouldn’t confuse “better” with “solved.”
