I’m mildly surprised Anthropic is leaning into a marketplace angle instead of pretending Claude can just absorb the whole software stack by itself. That feels smarter. If you’re building with Claude, the annoying part is rarely the model; it’s the glue. The connectors, the permissions, the half-broken integrations, the “can this actually talk to our systems?” layer. A marketplace is basically Anthropic admitting that reality and trying to make the mess legible.
What catches my eye is not the “2,000+” number. That’s the sort of headline stat that can hide a lot of dead weight. The interesting bit is the mix: Atlassian, Google, Microsoft, Notion, Salesforce, plus partners like CrowdStrike, Cursor, Harvey, Legora, Lovable, and Snowflake. That’s a broader play than simple app-store theater. Anthropic seems to be trying to make Claude the place where work actually gets assembled, not just queried.
I’m a little skeptical of the “Play Store for AI” framing, though. Play Store analogies are easy to say and hard to earn. A marketplace only works if discovery is genuinely better than “I already know the vendor I want, I’ll just use their own product.” OpenAI’s app marketplace is the cautionary tale here, and the article is right to call that out. The hard problem isn’t listing integrations. It’s making people return to the marketplace because it saves time, reduces setup pain, or unlocks something they can’t get elsewhere.
The part I’d actually want to test is MCP and Agent Skills. That’s the bit with teeth. If Anthropic can make it genuinely easy for developers to publish connectors and for teams to trust what lands in their environment, then this could become useful infrastructure instead of a catalog nobody remembers to open. But that “if” is doing a lot of work. Marketplaces in AI tend to drift toward empty storefronts unless the developer experience is excellent and the customer payoff is immediate.
So yes, this looks more serious than a branding exercise. But I don’t think the story is the number of plugins. It’s whether Claude can become the default place where company workflows get wired together without everyone having to build brittle custom integrations by hand.
