Claude in the car feels more useful than it sounds

The part that actually interests me here is not “Claude in CarPlay,” because that headline basically writes itself. It’s that Apple has apparently finally loosened the CarPlay sandbox enough to let a third-party chatbot live inside the interface at all. That’s the real story. The rest is just Anthropic being early enough to get a working integration out first, before everyone else piles in.

I’m mildly surprised Apple allowed this without letting the assistant touch vehicle controls or iPhone functions. That restraint makes sense, but it also means the feature is narrower than the headline implies. This is not “your car has an AI copilot now.” It’s closer to “you can speak to Claude while driving, as long as you keep using it like a glorified voice app.” That distinction matters.

The no-third-party-wake-word limitation is the bit I’d expect to annoy people in practice. If you have to open Claude from the CarPlay interface first, then the convenience story gets weaker fast. In a car, friction is everything. If the workflow turns into “tap the app, then talk,” a lot of drivers will just keep using Siri or not bother at all. Maybe that’s fine for now. Maybe Apple is intentionally keeping the UX awkward until it’s sure this won’t become a distraction magnet.

I also think this is one of those features that sounds more futuristic than it will feel. What I’d actually want to test is whether the voice experience is fast enough to be worth the switch. If it’s laggy or needs too much babysitting, it’ll become one more demo that looks better in screenshots than on a highway.
