What surprised me is not that Anthropic is trying to get Claude to operate hardware. That was always the direction of travel. What surprised me is the particular shape of the move: a vendor-facing file format that tries to turn messy machine knowledge into something a model can consume safely. That is much more interesting than “AI, but for robots” marketing, because it gets at the part everyone tends to hand-wave away: who decides what the model is actually allowed to do?
If MHS works the way Anthropic hopes, it could be genuinely useful. A lot of industrial and lab hardware lives behind tribal knowledge, PDFs nobody trusts, and one exhausted engineer who knows the magic sequence. Encoding safe operating limits in a standard file sounds boring, but boring is exactly what you want when the machine can crush a hand or ruin an expensive experiment. I’d actually want to see whether this becomes a real interoperability layer or just another Anthropic-shaped wrapper around a demo.
The Europe angle is where the article gets more serious, and a bit more loaded. Once machinery safety functions fall under regulation, this stops looking like a neat spec and starts looking like compliance infrastructure. That matters because a file that constrains speed, angles, and allowed actions is no longer just “instructions for Claude” in any casual sense. It may become part of the safety case. If that is true, then the people writing MHS files are not just integrating a model; they are participating in a regulated control stack.
I’m also a little skeptical of the seamlessness implied by the demo. A scientist sends Claude a PDF, Claude runs the experiment on compliant hardware, and everyone nods. Fine. But the hard part is not the happy path. It’s calibration drift, weird edge cases, broken sensors, ambiguous procedures, and the thousand ways real lab hardware differs from the clean spec. This might work in controlled settings long before it works in the kind of factory or lab where you’d actually want it.
What I do like is that Anthropic is being more concrete here than in a lot of “agents will use tools” rhetoric. Hardware needs a standard. Permissions need structure. Safety needs to be machine-readable, not just buried in a policy page nobody enforces. If Anthropic can make that legible to vendors and regulators at the same time, that would be a real contribution. If not, it will be another elegant abstraction that looks great in preview and gets painful the moment a real machine is involved.
