A PDF tool that actually respects local workflows

What jumped out at me is not the PDF features themselves — those are useful, sure — but the way this repo is trying to become infrastructure for every surface at once: CLI, MCP, browser, desktop, REST, even an embed widget. That’s ambitious in a way I usually distrust a little. Most projects that promise “one engine, many surfaces” end up with one surface that’s clearly first-class and the rest feeling bolted on. Here, the pitch suggests the opposite: Rust core first, interfaces second. I’d want to verify that before I got too excited.

The thing I’d actually try first is the MCP angle. “Merge these two PDFs and compress the result” is the sort of boring, practical task that makes an AI tool feel real instead of ornamental. If this works cleanly with Claude Code or Claude Desktop, that’s genuinely useful. A lot of agent integrations are demos looking for a job. PDF handling is the kind of unglamorous job agents are surprisingly good at, if the toolchain stays stable.

I’m also mildly skeptical of the privacy story until I see how the browser and desktop pieces behave under pressure. “Files never leave your machine” is a strong claim, and the repo says the browser path keeps everything in memory, which is encouraging, but I’d still want to inspect the edge cases. OCR, extraction adapters, signature handling, sanitization — those are exactly the places where a “local-only” system can get complicated fast. The phrase “sub-5ms” for ingestion also makes me raise an eyebrow. Maybe for a tiny in-memory adapter path, perhaps. For real documents, I’d treat that as a lab number, not something to quote back at people.

Still, the project has a kind of practical honesty I like. It’s not pretending PDFs are magical; it’s just attacking the mess from a bunch of angles and leaning hard into local execution. If the implementation is as clean as the architecture diagram wants it to be, this could become one of those small tools that quietly ends up in every dev’s toolbox.
