Apple’s “walled garden” looks a lot less sealed

The part that jumps out to me isn’t the Siri angle. It’s the idea that Apple might end up as a kind of router for other people’s models, with Siri as the traffic cop rather than the brain. That’s a much bigger shift than “Siri got better.” It would mean Apple is admitting, in practice if not in language, that the best assistant for a given job might be Claude or ChatGPT.

I’m a little skeptical of how clean this sounds in the article. Leaked builds and private frameworks are useful clues, but they’re still not the same as a product you can ship to millions of users without weird edge cases. The claim that a third-party model can “replace Siri altogether” sounds especially slippery. Replace what, exactly? The voice UI? The reasoning layer? The system permissions layer? Those are not the same thing, and the article seems to glide over that distinction.

What I do find plausible is delegation. That’s the part that makes sense technically and product-wise. Siri handles the device-bound stuff, and when it hits a task that’s better suited to a general model, it hands it off. That’s a sane architecture. It’s also probably the only way Apple can let these models do anything useful without handing them the keys to the whole phone. If Claude is creating a reminder, great. If it needs access to mail or messages, Apple still gets to stay in the loop.

The more interesting wrinkle is the privacy tradeoff. If model output and interaction logs can be pushed into OpenAI’s web interface for later access, that’s convenient, but it also means the assistant is no longer just “on device” in any meaningful sense. Maybe that’s acceptable for some users. I think plenty of developers will be fine with it if the workflow is better. But Apple users are going to notice pretty quickly when “private assistant” turns into “assistant with a cloud memory somewhere else.”

The EU angle feels believable too, though the article leans on it a bit heavily. Regulation has been one of the few forces strong enough to make platform companies open up. Still, I’d be careful about treating this as pure compliance theater. Apple is also probably doing the obvious strategic thing: if it can’t be the best model vendor, it can at least become the best distribution layer for model vendors. That’s a very Apple move, just not the glossy version.

If this leaked setup is real, Claude and ChatGPT developers should pay attention. The prize isn’t just “appearing in Siri.” It’s becoming the model Apple’s users hit first when they need something done on the device. That’s a much more valuable slot than people outside this ecosystem may realize.
