Spline’s bet is bigger than “AI can edit 3D”

What jumped out at me is not that Spline wired Claude Code into its editor. It’s that they rebuilt the whole 3D editor first, which suggests this isn’t a flashy plugin story. They seem to be betting that agentic workflows only become useful once the host app is designed around them from the start. That feels right to me. Most “AI inside X” demos still assume the old UI is the center of gravity, and then they bolt an agent onto the side like a chatbot with a mouse. That usually gets old fast.

The interesting part is the MCP angle. If Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex can all touch live 3D scenes through the same interface, then the real product isn’t “Claude helps with Spline.” It’s “Spline becomes a machine-readable workspace that multiple coding agents can operate on.” That is much more ambitious, and also much riskier. Once you let an agent edit live scene state, you’ve moved from suggestion territory into the land of accidental chaos. I’d want to know how much guardrailing is actually there: can the agent only perform scoped edits, can it inspect scene structure safely, can you roll back cleanly, can humans see every change before it lands?

I’m also a little skeptical of the “real-time collaborators” framing. Agents are good at being eager. Collaboration implies judgment, context, and restraint. Those are still the weak spots. In a 3D editor, a wrong move can be visually obvious but semantically expensive. If an agent shifts a hierarchy, breaks constraints, or muddles naming conventions, the damage may not show up immediately. So yes, the idea is compelling, but I’d call it promising infrastructure rather than proof that agents are ready to co-design in a serious production workflow.

Still, this is the direction I’d watch. Not “can Claude write code for my app,” but “can the app expose a clean enough control surface that an agent can operate it safely.” That’s a much better test of whether MCP is becoming real or just remaining a nice demo protocol.
